Morzine lies in the heart of the massive
Portes du Soleil ski
region of the French Savoie Alps, half way between Lake Geneva
and Mont Blanc. Avoriaz and Les Gets are the nearest
linked resorts with Avoriaz set high above Morzine, at 1800m.
During a seven-day holiday, it is possible to ski in a different
area on every day. In the winter, the Portes du Soleil area
links together up to 14 resorts spanning across two countries,
France and Switzerland. There is enough variety across the
skiing domain to entertain both strong skiers and snowboarders
during the week. Runs descending from Pointe de Nyon, and
Chamossiere are challenging and the black runs from Mont Chéry
are not for the faint hearted!
Morzine has something for everyone; it is especially a true
favourite for mixed ability
groups and families.
It is the closest of the major alpine ski resorts to Geneva
airport with a transfer time of one and a half hours.
The original ski area is accessed from Morzine by the Pleney lift station. The ski area is a large but relatively gentle area with many easy greens, blues and reds plus a couple of blacks on the Nyon side. Once you have explored the three major areas of Pleney, Nyon and Les Chavannes you can try out the runs on the other side of Les Gets on Mont Chery.
Morzine itself is a typical old alpine town with a bustling town centre, which has retained much of its character, charm and strong French flavour with excellent facilities for après ski. The town offers a decent selection of shops and restaurants with a good choice of non-skiing activities.
Les Gets which is about 10 km by road from Morzine is a typical Savoyard village. The village is small and pretty and offers good access to its own varied slopes and the main Portes du Soleil ski area. The centre of the village is partly car-free and has plenty of attractive shops and restaurants.
Avoriaz
at1800m is perched above Morzine in a dramatic position on a
rock face. It is a purpose built,
traffic free resort with excellent access to the main slopes.
Most accommodation is right on the slopes.
